Displacement Mapping - Tutorial - Intermediate

A great technique for showing Crazy textures on objects!

--please note(this does not show everything, if i did then it would take days to follow, some might require some side practice)

Displacement mapping will take an image and contort it to the point that it follows the highlights and shadows of another image thus creating a displacement effect. (ea. i have a logo of a British flag, i can add a displacement that will make the flag look like its in the wind with a bunch of rolls and bends within the cloth)

so here i will show you the basic concept of the displacement map by adding texture to skin:

1 . import an image that includes a body type (face, hand, foot, etc.) i went ahead and separated the hand from the original object onto a separate layer and made it black and white. I then added a few personal layer adjustments to bring out the lights and darks within the hand:

2 . In your layers tab go to the alpha channel, start looking at your image through single channels (Hide or click on separate channels to view the lights and darks)
When you feel that you found channel that shows the most contrast, right click on that single channel and select duplicate channel ( does not apply for black and white images [each chanels the same])
2A . an option box will appear and you will want make the same as below and click ok
2B . now a new document should have shown up and save that file to desired location (make sure it's a .psd)

3 . close map document and revert back to you original document. make sure you set your channels back to (all channels)
3A . bring an image into the scene and this will be your image that will distort. place the image nicely over your point of interest
3B. now you can find the filter displace through the picture below:

4. Now you will see some option pop up, follow the picture for the pixel displacement box. click ok and then it will ask you to find your (map.psd) find it and click open.

5. now you might notice that your texture might have bent a little, well thats what we were looking for now you just need to seal the deal. with you texture selected in layer tab, where you see (normal) change it to (overlay).
5A. if you cut out your object of interest then you can do this ( right click on texture and select create clipping mask ) this will cut out whatever doesn't exist on the layer below creating perfect fit:

and there you have it, from there its left up to you about your finalized look heres and example of what i did with it, hope this tutorial helped.
